Revised USCIS Form I-9

Published by Dave Danic on 09 Jan 2017

In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, for each new employee, employers must comply with the verification of employment eligibility with the timely completion of Form I-9.

The U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the release of a newly revised version of the Form I-9. Employers must begin using the new form exclusively to conduct employment eligibility verification beginning January 22, 2017. Changes you’ll find on the new I-9 include:

Form I-9 employment revision.jpgSmart features. The new design of Form I-9 will include smart-features to make it easier when filling out the form I-9 and make changes electronically. This smart feature will automatically generate a QR code (Quick Response or barcode) to be used by the USCIS enforcement auditors.

Content-based revisions. This feature includes new drop-down lists and calendars to enter dates, prompts to ensure that information is correctly entered and access to instructions for each field. When information is missing or incorrect the revised form will highlight areas that need completed or if information provided does not match. It also includes an option to clear the form and start over if necessary.

* “Additional Information” Box

* A field for “other last names used”

* A field for those who provide an Alien Registration number (A-number) or USCIS number correlating with citizenship or immigration status.

* Certain foreign national employees must enter their formI-94 or foreign passport information. On the prior version both were required.

* A section for multiple translators or preparer. If there was no translator or preparer used the employee must check the box “I did not use a translator or preparer”.

Although Form I-9 can be filled out on the USCIS website, this form will still need to be printed and have a hand written signature of both the employee and employer.
