Watch Out for Bogus Charities

Published by Adam Hale on 14 Sep 2016

Scammers are always waiting for a good opportunity. In times of a crisis, as many want to help all those that are suffering, scammers are ready to take advantage of the situation. Before you donate, do your research to ensure your charity is ligament. How? Here are some sign that your charity may be bogus.

Evasive callers. Legitimate callers will be forthright about the charity. The caller will tell you what thief_on_computer_7301.jpgpercentage of the donations is allocated to administration and marketing, as well as who will be helped by your donation. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and expect direct answers. Listen for vague statements such as “promotion awareness” or education the public. In a time of crises is when heartless scammers tend to strike.

Urgent online requests. We’ve all seen the social media postings that led to fake websites, or emails with desperate pleas for money that actually originate from the backroom computer of a scam artist. NEVER divulge your financial information via email and don't assume that social media messages about a particular charity are legitimate.

The fly-by-night charity. Every legitimate charitable association had a start date, and some are still being formed. But during a major crisis, such as a natural disaster, donate to charities that you trust, which means those with a proven track record. If you're unsure, check out a charity watchdog group for details.

You want your donations to provide help where it is most needed, not line a scammer's pocket. Take time to make sure the charity you're donating to is legitimate.
